This series centers queer joy. That said, the characters in these books haven’t had the easiest lives and deal with the lingering impacts of past trauma. Proceed with caution if the below may be uncomfortable. Blanche's book is quite heavy, but the themes of this book are full of hope and healing. I promise everyone is going to come out of this whole and loved.
A romantic relationship with a significant age gap between a college student and a trans sex worker.
Difficulties maintaining sobriety for two characters, no relapse or substance use by either of them. Some excessive substance use by non-sober characters, with no significant consequences.
Transphobia, biphobia, and homophobia, including sexual harassment, microaggressions, and deadnaming by unsupportive parents, including scenes where:
Richard meets with his parents, knowing he'll get misgendered.
Lee, Antonio, and Jazz spend time with the Leland Senior, who is not subtle in his prejudices.
Sexual content between people of all genders to varying intensity, including:
An off-page professional BDSM arrangement between Blanche and their client(s).
Sex during pregnancy, including one off-page scene with a third participant. There are no medically graphic symptoms of pregnancy beyond fatigue, sore breasts, a high second trimester sex drive and an active bladder.
Consensual BDSM arrangement between Richard and Sunny.
Difficulties managing mental health, including depictions of panic attacks, dissociation, flashbacks, and substance use to cope with emotions. This book explores recovery from sexual trauma.
Gabe went from being a bullied teenager to a series of bad relationships, which he recounts and has lingering symptoms of the trauma, including flashbacks. He is still on his healing journey and experiences some setbacks, but is overall in control of his mental health and determined to heal into a healthier person. In this book, he does encounter his abuser, which causes him some additional mental trauma, but he comes out the other side mostly unscathed and more hopeful for his future.
Blanche discusses the impacts of being trafficked as a child and being a cult survivor more openly than previous books.
The main characters come in a wide range of body types and appearances. This book takes a body-neutral approach, however some characters have biases and insecurities. In particular, Gabe experiences more body dysmorphia than other characters, and shows some signs of disordered eating hidden behind "fitness" culture. Tara also experiences an increase in body image issues with her pregnancy.
References to past traumatic events occur off-page but may be heavy for some readers, including trafficking, child abuse, abusive relationships, addiction, self-harm, and assault.
